Cyclical Depression is primarily about how you will always come down after a high whether it is from drugs, personal euphoria, or otherwise. When I examine my life in terms of the American perspective I realize that I am an outsider within my own home. The fact that this essay was about the indiviudal and their relation to society is interesting because I am a black female.

What I have learned about myself through this process is that I am a stronger individual than I previously conceived. When I was in class thinking about a topic to write about I realized that White America is still synonymous with America and Blacks are still treated as Negroes in their own homes. The issue with this is that a society that oppresses one group of individuals feels inferior to said group which is why they feel like the balance needs to be restored.

The balance between blacks and whites was disrupted the minute the first ship arrived to the African shores and it still has not been restored. My attempt to see this balance begin to appear is to inform individuals that black people and females are still human. When we stop seeing each other as labels and start seeing each other as people hopefully we will stop the inequality.

That is what drove me to choose the topic I did. I saw an opportunity to examine myself and my own prejudices and hope to understand why others have their own prejudices. My intended audience for this essay was essentially everyone. I hope that individuals that fit into similar labels will see the influence they have on the society around them as well as the influence the society has around them. My other hope is that individuals that do not fit into the same labels that I do will understand the same things.

It is not new for me to discuss the things the that I find interesting, but this topic on race and gender was difficult to discuss simply because the time that we live in today has much more fluid lines between ethnicity and gender. Things are no longer black and white, but multiple shades of grey. Over the course of the semester I have grown as an individual due to the open ended discussion on various topics. I remember comments being said such as “I don’t understand why black people are still mad about slavery,” or “I’m tired of minorities blaming white men for their issues.” Comments like this made me understand that individuals that belong to white America will never understand minority issues until they learn to check their own privilege

In creating the e-portfolio I was primarily focused on the design aspect and how my essay could be best fit for a web interface. I chose to use neutral colors such as black and white simply because the issue of race is still pertinent in today’s society. I chose the color red because something that is common is blood.
