PUBLIC BUSINESS: The National Oxymoron

The concept of the Public has immensely changed over time. The context of who is considered a part of this theoretical group is directly linked to who has freedom, or relative freedom. Today we want to consider everyone to be a part of the group that is considered free, but Klein’s outlook is that we overlook the poor. Those that are not within or benefiting from the private sector would be considered the public. When we look at the expanse of capitalism in America, the individuals that oppose the expansion beit because of their personal beliefs or their economic plights are the public which does not benefit. Big business does not benefit the public in any way, but the public through consumerism benefits the businesses. This outlines the cycle of American economy.

When individuals attempt to disband this theory of who is in control of nature as discussed in Klein’s book, This Changes Everything the individual is separated from the public and public is redefined as the common group. There is no longer a focus of the privatization of economy, but the privatization of the individual views. For Klein, the primary issue of society is capitalism and its push towards global warming and the conflict between human needs. The climate change on the planet is primarily influenced by capitalism because in the push for local economy and the shift from international dependence for energy. When governments push for more drilling, they are in turn taking away from the livelihoods of individuals that rely on the land.
